Construction Of Ogbomu Culvert And Channelisation Of Gully Erosion And Flood Control Sites In Irele And Ipao Ekiti Under Our NEWMAP Programme In The State Ministry Of Environment

Our Assessment

This promise is rated partially completed. While Governor Fayemi began the construction of Ogbomu Culvert and channelisation of gully erosion and flood control sites in Irele and Ipao Ekiti, the work was not concluded till leaving office in October 2022.

Why It Matters

Gully erosion destroys farmland, homes, and roads, displacing entire communities. Channelisation and culvert construction under NEWMAP (Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project) permanently controls flooding, protects vulnerable livelihoods, and prevents further land degradation. This saves lives, preserves agricultural land, and secures critical infrastructure in erosion-prone Ekiti communities.

Progress So Far

Fayemi begins the construction of Ogbomu Culvert

The NEWMAP programme in Ekiti State was active during Governor Fayemi's tenure, and started the Ogbomu culvert construction or channelisation work at Irele and Ipao Ekiti. Physical visits to the site shows that the Ekiti State government has commenced the construction of the Ogbomu culvert and channelisation of gully erosion and flood control in the state. The Ekiti Digital Communications Department also reported this on the state's media channels.

However, Governor Kayode Fayemi did not complete the Ogbomu culvert that he started. A visit to the site of the project shows clearly that the channelisation was not completed.
